S. Abhaya Kumar is in real sense a jewel of Rajasthan and India. Hailing from Rajasthan, but based in Chennai, he is an industrialist and social educationaist for over three and half decades. He is doing India proud abroad too with achieving excellence of international standards in his ventures.
Son of Shri Sankarlal Jain and Smt. Sundarbai, he was born in 1953 at Chennai. His father went from Rajasthan to Chennai in the early 20TH century and rose to be an eminent businessman and founded SHASUN GROUP of companies. Shri Sankarlal jain was also instrumental in starting many educational institutions and was involved in social welfare of the community in particular and society in general.
S. Abhaya Kumar is an engineering graduate from Madras University and has mastered many corporate skills various institutes. No wonder, he is holding a number of positions in about eight companies, wherein he is Managing Director, Vice Chairman, Director, Chief Promoter and Secretary General. Shasun Pharmaceuticals Ltd, to name one of them managed by him, is growing fast in the USA.

Married to Usha, they have two sons and one daughter, all settled in Chennai. Daughter Ms. Kashmira is proprietor of Velocity in Chennai. Elder son mayor Abhaya is Executive Director of Lifecell International Pvt. Ltd. The other son, Deepak Abhaya is Director Marketing Nutra Specialities Pvt. Ltd.
Shasun Pharmaceuticals Business Focus in USA
Managed by Mr. Abhaya Kumar, Shasun Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Was one of the earliest Indian companies to focus on regulated markets with focus on US market. Their key strengths lie in regulatory capabilities, world-class manufacturing facilities which are FDA approved & GMP compliant and of course, excellent, long-term customer relationships. Shasun entered USA by setting up its office – Shasun USA Inc – in Boston. With initial offering of Ibuprofen – a key API, today Shasun has expanded its Product and Customer base to include major and emerging pharmaceutical innovators as well as generic customers.
While the IP environment in India had still not been very conducive for these transactions, Shasun was able of gain the respect and trust form Major pharmaceutical innovator companies which led to it being a pioneer / first mover advantage of Contract Research and Contract Manufacturing (CRAMs) in India. With the acquisition of Rhodia Pharma Solutions in 2006 which in now called Shasun Pharma Solutions, Shasun has doubled its CRAMs business in the US from its manufacturing facilities in the UK.
With Shasun Pharma Solutions expanding their Business Development team for the US market, their CRAM Services has spread the wings to doing business with the emerging Pharma companies for the early stage development opportunities, with services inclusive of synthesis of grams to kilos to Multi-ton quantities from their Indian and UK facilities.
Shasun has also ventured into its own development of novel radioactive compounds for oncology therapy with its subsidiary company in Columbia, Missouri, called “Shasun-NBI Inc” and this is under the aegis of the University of Missouri. Top dignitaries of the state of Missouri are involved in the company efforts and are keen to see it realize the potential of these molecules for treatment of various serious tumours relevant to US, and India. Their lead candidate has already seen successful preclinical results in animal models in terms of safety and efficacy.
With US being a key focus market, Shasun has ventured into the Formulation Business and the site was first inspected and approved in 2006 and today Shasun is one of the preferred partners for the generic industry with a goal of filing 10 ANDA’s every year.
Over the years, Shasun is moving towards a strong generic portfolio with focus on expanding its API offering and has set a goal to file 10 new DMF’s every year. This makes Shasun truly a One-Stop Shop for their customers, servicing from early stage pharmaceutical development to manufacturing of API’s and formulations. The capacity of finished dosage form facility has been grown from 2 billion to 6 billion units. Shasun is investing again in the expansion of upt 10 billion units per year. Shasun is investing in the Vizag manufacturing facility towards back – integrating into Ibuprofen (largest manufacturer in the world currently) and towards key APIs and intermediates owing to the needs of US pharma majors. In the existent Pondicherry facility, dedicated production block is being planned for key polymeric based APIs with an overall market potential of 550 MT per year. Key focus is on value added products like derivatives of Ibuprofen and new products generics with patent expiry post 2020s.
Son of Mr. Abhaya Kumar, Mr. Mayur Abhaya graduated from Anna University in Chennai pursing Industrial Biotechnology and thereafter went of North-western University in the US for a master’s program in management. He returned to India in 2001 to join Shasun where in he spent 7 years and contributed chiefly in new product development, intellectual property management, and IT systems and ERP implementation. Thereafter her joined LifeCell, India’s premier stem cell bank, in 2008 as CEO. He has been instrumental in transformation of the company from a single service into a multi-services company and expanded operations to over 100 centers in India and abroad.
